I like Ellen and this is exactly how I feel. If she's a boring bust, well, fuck her.
She could never replace the hate for Kara though, no matter what she does. If Ellen makes Kara look like an idiot even one time, her place on the show will be worth it for me. |

| If anything this will help Kara because she won't be the new kid anymore and everyone will be too busy scrutinizing Ellen to pay attention to her. |

Michael Slezak still clings to the hope that American Idol is a music competition show rather than a Reality TV show with unintended comedic value -- a lot of which has been lost with the departure of Paula Abdul, although dogface now represents that portion of the show (i.e., I don't know how that song lets people know what it would be like to go shopping with Taylor; Studio 57; Early Aerosmith). The Panel of Stooges has never been a true panel of experts or professionals -- they come nowhere near the true professional judging panel on Nashville Star 1 of Robert K. Oermann, Tracy Gershon, and Charlie Robison, and don't even meet the original panel on Arsenio Hall's Star Search of Naomi Judd, Ben Stein, and Ahmet Zappa.
Slezak is right that the focus should be on the contestants, but the producers totally disagree with him -- they believe that Seacrest, the mentors, and the Panel of Stooges, especially Simon, are more important than the mainly fungible contestants.
Slezak is also dead wrong, in my view, that Simon is the Voice of the People. To me, Simon is the master manipulator who influences the non-VFTW people who pick up the phone and vote. Simon has told more lies about the contestants and the performances in eight seasons than Randy, Paula, Kara, and Dick Cheney combined.
I think the selection of Ellen is a mixed bag. If the producers make her a foil to Simon, someone who will call him on his producer-influenced manipulation and lying, with a lot of "Oh, come ons" and sharp jokes about Simon's musical acumen, her role could work. On the other hand, if the producers think that Ellen brings higher ratings during the course of the season, she is four years older than Paula, so will the coveted youth viewership return to watching Idol because of the addition of an aging comedienne, or will the show just attract the frauen and the ratings will continue to drop?
Quote: If the show was really looking at balancing things out, they would have picked a radio DJ to fill the 4th judges spot. Ellen sounds good on paper but, like the article quoted above says, she was pretty boring as a judge.
Makes the case for Seacrest as a judge and Ellen as host. |

| Houster, while I think you make some very valid points I have to disagree about one thing. The Frauen can stay up later voting than the Tweentards and have a lot more money to buy downloads and concert tickets. The failure of American Juniors proved that to TPTB. Ellen will bring a huge following of Fraufallo, well any that aren't already watching and they'll vote/buy even more if Ellen tells them to do it. Does it really make that much difference that Ellen is 4 years older than Pauler? I mean really, when you're 12 vs. 16 maybe but 80 vs. 84 not so much. |

| A lot of people are judging Ellen based on one gig as a judge on a dancing show. I watched the clip and thought she was as funny as she could have been. I think it would be very difficult to judge a dancing show when you have no formal training... and be funny doing it at the same time. Singing shows are different because it's easier to tell when someone has a bad performance. There are very few obviously bad dancers on SYTYCD because they weed them all out before the voting rounds. |

I also watched the clip. She could be funny, but I don't think I could take a steady diet of her. On and on with the jokes, only to end it with a type of joke saying "you were great". 1-2 weeks maybe, but that's it.
Getting hot chicks? Money and/or career moves definitely played a part.
AND if she isn't doing the record com(s) won't sue me if I do I judge AI deal, she'll make a boat load of $$ and can write her own career ticket- or not- in the future. Talk show is getting old, probably even for her.

From Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider column, Nigel Lythgoe on Ellen DeGeneres: 'Idol stole her from us':

Nigel Lythgoe on Ellen DeGeneres: 'Idol stole her from us'
by Lynette Rice
So You Think You Can Dance judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told EW that American Idol “stole” Ellen DeGeneres from his show so he’ll “steal” Paula Abdul as a guest judge in the future. Talking from the red carpet of Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles, Lythgoe said though he “loved” having DeGeneres on the Fox dance show (”We hope she will still be able to come and help us out from time to time”) Lythgoe said it would be a “great idea” to have Abdul join the SYTYCD team in the near future. ”I’d prefer Paula,” he said. “I think it is a great idea to put her on.”
But Lythgoe was quick to add that DeGeneres will be a valued addition to Idol. “What it does is give the public, who are the people who decide in the end who is crowned the victor, a voice on the judges panel and they have never had that before,” the former Idol producer told EW. “They already have industry experts, musicians and producers and songwriters represented and Ellen will be that judge who comes at it from a fan perspective. She loves music and she will be able to speak about what people will like and what would sound good on the radio. And she’s funny. And I also think she is strong enough to keep Simon in his place, which I am always worried about.” —With reporting from Carrie Bell

They can't steal Pauler. Then I might have to actually watch SYTYCD.
Cat: Pauler, what did you think of Jaysyn and Koortniey's samba?
Pauler: She danshed really good. *falls over on desk*
You know Pauler will be taking even more painkillers to deal with the PAIN of losing her job. |

Oh God, Kathy Griffin would be a if she had been picked! I can see it now...
Kathy Griffin stands at the judges table and asks: "Where's my Gays at?" Pauses and then says: "Oh there you are Ryan!" |

OMG I would have tarded so bad over Kathy Griffin. She is hilarious. They'd never hire her though. She's too unpredictable and out of control.
Ellen will be a good puppet for them. She'll do as she's told. |
