Jagger backs Dublin singer for the top

STUNNING Dublin singer Carly Hennessy has been tipped as the next big thing by some of music's biggest stars.

The 18-year-old beauty-who has just released her debut single Blow Your Mind-counts Rolling Stones rocker Mick Jagger and soul diva Mariah Carey among her greatest fans.

And the Ballinteer girl is amazed at just how normal mega-stars can be. Carly, who has lived and worked in LA since she was 18, said: "Mick is a nice, normal guy, he's not a bit sleazy.

"I met him when we were both recording at the same studio in LA.

"We shared the lounge area between our two studios so we spent a lot of time together."

When Carly first spoke to the ageing rock god, she greeted him as she would any other guy.

"When I was introduced to him, everyone was asking me if I was nervous or excited," she said.

"But I wasn't, he's just another man at the end of the day. I just said, 'Hey, how's it going'. And I think he appreciated the way I treated him."

Over the few weeks they spent in the studios Mick and Carly became firm friends, and the Stones legend even got to meet her pals.

"I showed him a video tape of me and my friends back in Dublin and he thought it was hilarious," explained the singer.

And that wasn't the only thing that caused some laughs during Carly's time in the studio. The gorgeous brunette would turn up for her recording sessions in ...pyjamas and slippers. She explained: "I like to feel free when I'm singing, so I wear baggy clothes. No one ever said anything and they got used to it after a while."

However, not everyone was so laid back about Carly's wacky dress code. When Rap queen Missy 'Misdemeanour' Elliot stopped by the studio she was shocked by the casual Dubliner.

Carly revealed: "Missy passed my door and shouted, 'Oh my God, that girl's in her pyjamas'. It was quite embarrassing."

But Carly's casual approach to singing paid off when one of her pop idols nipped in for a chat after hearing her song being played next door. She said: "I knew Mariah Carey was in the studio next to me but I never thought she'd be bothered about meeting me.

"I had this image of her being a big diva, throwing tantrums and making demands, but I was so wrong.

"She told me she loved my song and thought I was a great singer.

"I was completely gobsmacked, one of the world's most successful female singers was praising me."

Carly may be rising to the top of the music world, but to get there she had to pay the price for fame.

At the tender age of 15 she left home to pursue her dream in America.

Her father Luke helped set her up with a record company before heading home to Ireland, leaving Carly in the hands of MCA Records.

But lonely nights and vicious press reports have haunted the talented singer in her struggle for pop fame.

"I've made my share of sacrifices. It hasn't all been about making music and celebrity parties," said Carly. "I spent my 18th birthday and Christmas Day sitting in my apartment alone."

After two years of perfecting her sound Carly released her debut album, Ultimate High, in 2001 and was ready to take on Europe.

Soon her face was on the cover of the Wall Street Journal-but for the wrong reasons.

She revealed: "They made it look like I was kicked out of America because I'd been a flop and a waste of money.

"But I left because my album was released two weeks before September 11.

"At that time music wasn't being played or bought. It made sense to cut our losses, go to Europe earlier than expected and then return to America at a better time."

He savvy singer didn't let the flopstar tag get her down.

She said: "The article really didn't bother me.

Fame

"I got my face on the cover of the Wall Street Journal and everyone wanted to know who I was. It actually helped me a lot."

Back in Ireland, Carly has already supported Canadian rocker Bryan Adams and played to more than 100,000 at the O2 Party In The Park.

"It was weird performing in Ireland for the first time," she said.

"I've looked out into 50,000 faces before, but this time I could see my family and friends looking back up at me."

Happy as she is to be home, Carly is eager to get back to the States after Christmas.

She said: "I have lots of friends there. I feel I belong there now."

THE official Meteors after-show party at Spirit nightclub turned into a hilarious procession of embarrassed stars who were not famous enough to be let in.

First Best Female artist Carly Hennessy, right, turned up with a small entourage and headed straight for the VIP rope.

But when the bouncer refused to let her in she even went to the trouble of bringing out her award and waving it at him.

Even that didn't do the trick so she stormed off again shaking her head in disbelief.

Then Jackass star Party Boy turned up, confident that he would be welcomed straight into the VIP section after he presented an award and turned up with Colin Farrell.

But again the door man turned him away, forcing Party Boy's agent to rush off and eventually get a VIP wrist band to allow him in.

Big Brother star Brian Dowling arrived with a male companion but didn't stay long - for he too was given the cold shoulder.

One onlooker said: "There were a lot of big egos crushed at that VIP entrance. It was hilarious to see them all turned away."

And isn't Carly's name actually Carol? I know that's in the beginning parts of this thread somewhere. I'm surprised we don't talk about it more.
